General Tips for Writing Well

  • Paragraphs should flow well with each other
  • Make sure your paragraphs are organized by topic
  • Open each paragraph with a good topic sentence
  • Break down long paragraphs into sub-paragraphs
  • Preceding sentence/paragraph should flow well with the next (transition)
  • Average person should easily understand your writing
  • Use language that is simple & makes sense to your audience
  • Clarify and explain hard terminology i.e. diseases
  • Article must have an introduction & conclusion
  • Keep sentences short

Avoid

  • Spelling errors
  • Submit paper without reading it at least 3 times
  • Long paragraphs/sentences
  • Incomplete sentences
  • Using vague descriptions
  • Using incorrect punctuation (comma, period, semicolon)
  • Using a passive voice
